My name is Robert Frei and I am an honors program student at the University of Notre Dame. I’m currently studying Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in robotics and minor in Human-Centric design. On campus, I’m involved with e-NABLE, a student-run club that creates 3D printed prosthetics for children within the local low-income community. I also mentor a Lego robotics team at the local community center with an off-campus part time internship doing computer-aided-design and play trombone with the Fighting Irish Band. My goal post-graduation is to make a difference in people’s lives through human-focused robots such as prosthetics. I've created both a 3D-printed video game adapter and a fully custom-scanned, articulated and baseball-throwing prosthetic arm for my dad. By engineering replicable designs, my devices can totally change not just one person's day to day life, but countless more around the world and long after I'm gone.

My father Major Jason Frei is the bravest most inspiring and most genuine person I know. He attended the Naval Academy where he graduated with honors and then joined the United States Marine Corps and trained as a Field Artillery Officer in 1994. After 9/11, he deployed to Iraq as the Battery Commander, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. His convoy was ambushed where his humvee door took an RPG strike. He right hand was blown off, but he still self-applied a tourniquet, pulled his pistol and continued firing on the enemy until he was medevaced out.

He was recognized as one of the first significantly wounded servicemen on the War on Terror. He medically retired in 2004 and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor. Reintegrating into daily life as an amputee was incredibly difficult but bolstered by his faith and determination he continued to support me, my sister and my brother at the time all less than 6 years old. He’s an inspiration to me, to our family, and everyone in our community as the greatest hero I’ve ever known.

| CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT |
Kansas City Chapter

It’s a good time to live in Chiefs Kingdom! The Kansas City Chapter is celebrating their hometown Super Bowl Champs this month in addition to a very successful 2019 in which they raised over 1$ Million for Folds of Honor scholarships.

In December, they wrapped up the year with “Under the Stars and Stripes”, a holiday gala at the Cocherl Family Foundation’s beautiful Jefferson building in Leawood. The Chiefs were among many generous table sponsors for the event which raised $192,000. One hundred and fifty guests were treated to an elegant evening featuring music by the Emily Dix Collective, live and silent auctions, and a patriotic program including Folds of Honor recipient speakers and a flag folding ceremony by Eagle Scouts from Troop 315. Kansas City Royals pitcher, Ian Kennedy and his wife, Allison, walked away with a prized work of art by Zeke Crozier, medically retired veteran and Purple Heart recipient, and founder of Handy-Cappin’. Fifty lucky women went home with new Kendra Scott jewelry, a donation by the company that raised $5,000. Additionally, board members, Frank Kirk and Larry Pfeiffer, were honored for their many years of dedicated service to Folds of Honor with United States flags flown over the Capitol on Veteran’s Day. It was a memorable night!

Between the Chiefs, the Royals and the recent winter snow, Kansas City is painted Red, White and Blue! The Folds of Honor team is grateful for their loyal community and excited for another outstanding year of rallying support for military families.
