Stephen C. Frederico is a May 2019 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina and a two-time Folds of Honor higher education scholarship recipient. He found a passion for neuroscience and became heavily involved in research at the Medical University of South Carolina relating to pediatric brain tumor research. Stephen expresses his appreciation for his Folds of Honor scholarships as he was unsure he would advance this far in his educational journey without them. “It greatly eased the burden of the expense of attending college and limited the amount of time I would have to work (in order to pay the bills),” says Frederico. Because of the Folds of Honor scholarship assistance, Stephen was able to present some of his neuro-oncology research findings on nanoparticles and brain tumors via TED Talk.
Stephen credits his father with instilling an attitude of “never giving up” in him and believes that “anything is possible if you truly put your mind to it.”
Stephen’s father, Corporal Stephen D. Frederico served honorably with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines as a rifleman as part of the Multi-National Peace Keeping Force in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983. This unit became the main victim of the “Beirut Bombing” on October 23, 1983 when a truck loaded with 12,000 pounds of explosives crashed through the gates of the BLT headquarters at the airport in Beirut, Lebanon. Casualties on that day were 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 Soldiers with 100 individuals injured. The majority of the casualties were from this unit.

The Folds of Honor E. PA-NJ Chapter has hit the ground running this year, holding numerous events in their local community to help spread the Folds of Honor mission.
In their most recent event, the E. PA-NJ Chapter joined Budweiser and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizen's Park Stadium in support of our military families. A check was presented to Folds of Honor and scholarship recipient, Nate Flanders, was on hand to receive it in memory of his father, United States Army National Guard Joseph Flanders. The $10,000 check was presented by Walter Van Eyken and Sarah Razionale. E. PA-NJ Chapter members Beth Simmons, Jen Carbone, Matt Kardish and Andy Signor of the PGA were also there to support Nate and to thank Budweiser and the Phillies for their support!
A month before, the E. PA-NJ Chapter held its Inaugural Wingman Open at Navesink Country Club in Middletown, NJ. Sixty-eight golfers participated in the Scramble Tournament and raised $15,000! The event included lunch, golf, the opportunity to participate in an auction by Greenside Experiences, Folds of Honor guest speaker Ginger Ravella, dinner and an awards ceremony. We, along with the E. PA-NJ Chapter, thank title sponsor Aetna Foundation for its generosity along with sponsors Conner, Strong & Buckelew, One Call Care Management, Skylands Medical Group, Paul & Laura McGuigan, David Norton and John Lawrence.

Community Coffee Company, the largest family owned and operated coffee brand in the United States, is a proud partner of Folds of Honor. This summer, they launched an American Classic blend in honor of the men and women who have served and still serve our country.
Now through the end of July, Community Coffee will donate a portion of the proceeds from every bag and single-serve box of American Classic coffee purchased to Folds of Honor.

Memphis based PGA professional, Mickey Barker and sports announcer, Dave Woloshin hit their tee shots early morning June 20th as they embarked on their first Patriot Golf Day marathon. Conducting a golf marathon is one of the four Patriot Golf Day fundraising pillars, and they joined hundreds of others across the country this year. But what makes this Tennessee duo different from the rest is their marathon spanned eight different city courses totaling an amazing 117 holes played!
This multi-course approach was developed by the Memphis City Administrator of Golf, Mickey Barker. Once good friend and Sportstime Wolo & Stats broadcaster, Dave Woloshin learned about what Mickey was doing, the duo couldn’t be stopped.
“I have wanted to get involved with Folds of Honor for years and doing a marathon utilizing all of our city courses seemed like a lot of fun and a natural choice for me” said Barker.
Both Barker and Woloshin asked for pledges from friends and family supporting their efforts not knowing what to expect in year one. The generosity quickly poured in. Thus far, they have raised $4,472, which is roughly the amount of one full scholarship.
At the half way point in their round, Mickey and Dave were going strong.
“Morale is great because I get to watch Mickey play”, said Dave.
This statement was backed by double digit birdies and 2 eagles made by Barker thus far. At 8:24PM both marathoners sunk their last putts concluding all 117 holes, which prompted high fives all around. When asked what advice he’d give someone playing a Patriot Golf Day marathon, Dave said, “be patient”.
“And prepared” Mickey added.
