My name is Sydney Long, a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient. I am currently a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and am studying Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism Management along with Marketing. My father, Mark, served in the military for 23 years. His service is the reason I am the person I am today. He showed me what grit, hard-work, and tough love looked like. While there were times it was hard when he was away serving overseas, I know that he was protecting this country for me and you to have the freedom we do.
The Folds of Honor scholarship I received is helping me in a tremendous amount of ways. My parents expect me to fund the cost of my college education. I have worked since I was 14 years old to save for school. I have maintained part-time employment throughout high school and college, and I actively pursue scholarship opportunities to help with my educational expenses. This summer I am working over 45 hours/week between two jobs to save. This scholarship makes going to school possible. Additionally, I like to learn and experience new information and opportunities. I want to continue to do this during the remainder of my time at UNL, and your help contributes to this. Without the Folds of Honor scholarship, there are many educational goals that I would not have achieved: attending college, studying abroad, and pursuing a double major.
I am a proud daughter of a soldier and respect our military and this country. I always stand for the red white and blue and I know the sacrifices some must make to ensure our freedoms remain. I will work hard, strive for excellence, and make a worthwhile impact on this world. I am a big believer in paying things forward and I volunteer when I can to help our soldiers and veterans. In addition, I donate my time to Husker Heroes, a disability outreach program, sorority philanthropic events, and cheer appearances and volunteer opportunities.
My plans after college are to work in a marketing role within the hospitality arena, hopefully luxury hotels. A career in the hospitality industry will give me opportunities to work with diverse individuals, travel the world, and have variety in what I do. I am also interested in why consumers select and purchase the products they buy and how influential a quality marketing campaign can be. I hope that someday I can give back to our community, just like you guys did for me. I am excited for what the future holds. Thank you again for this scholarship, it means so much to me.

The Folds of Honor South Texas/Houston Chapter recently hosted The Memorial at the United States Air Force Academy. This unique golf event has been over five years in the making and finally came to fruition on July 8, 2019. It was held at the Eisenhower Golf Course located on the academy grounds. In just two short months, the committee planned and executed the first annual event raising more than $20,000 for Folds of Honor.
Flags were placed on each hole featuring yellow ribbons with the names of graduates who were killed in action, their graduating year and date of passing. A room filled with over 150 guests enjoyed an awards dinner immediately following the tournament. Each place setting included a card displaying the photo, name, rank, graduating class, military honors and decorations and date of passing of a fallen graduate. Honored guest speaker, Major Dan Rooney, shared his powerful testimony with all in attendance. A toast to the fallen took place, the 3rd verse of the Air Force song was performed by Cadet 1st Class Andrea Hilario and two special Gold Star families were honored. The families of Major Rick “Tracer” Schafer, Class of 2001, and Major David “Klepto” Brodeur, Class of 1999, were in attendance for this impactful event. The evening closed in a manner which our fallen brothers and sisters would want, with some laughs and entertainment. Patriotic Cowboy, and comedian, Chad Prather ended the event with a memorable performance for all attendees.
The chapter is thankful to each of their event sponsors and participants and looking ahead to their 2nd annual event, which will take place on Sept 6, 2020. The chapter is pleased to announce the Tournament Chairman, General Mark Welsh, who is the former Chief of Staff of the Air Force, former Commandant of Cadets, a graduate of USAFA, a Falcon Foundation Scholar and baseball alum of the Air Force Academy. We are excited to inform you one of our proud partners, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, will be hosting a national wine dinner fundraising event for Folds of Honor!
Carrabba’s Folds of Honor Wine Dinner is Wednesday, September 25th, where every wine dinner sold, Carrabba’s will donate $2 to Folds of Honor. Menu to include four courses with a fantastic wine pairing for each course, which includes Carrabba’s favorites like Tuscan Grilled Sirloin Marsala and Penne Marconi, penne pasta tossed with black pepper cream sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes and grilled shrimp.
Guests will also have the option to round up to the nearest dollar on all checks during the week of September 23 28th to provide an additional donation that will go straight to Folds of Honor.
“We are grateful to the brave service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Mike Kappitt, President of Carrabba’s Italian Grill. “Partnering with Folds of Honor allows us to help honor their sacrifice by making sure their children’s educational needs are being met.”
